San Francisco's Marina District Real Estate

The beautiful and chic Marina District is one of San Francisco’s most delightful neighborhoods. With its lovely Mediterranean style architecture and magnificent location on the edge of the Bay, it has the ambience of a lovely seaside resort town.

   San Francisco's Marina District History

The Marina was built on lagoon and marshland. The area just south of the marina was originally called Cow Hollow because it was used as dairy meadows. The Marina District was first developed in 1915 as the site of the Panama-Pacific Exposition, to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. It was planned to be the most extravagant World’s Fair in history, and a symbol of San Francisco’s rebirth after the devastating earthquake of 1906. The striking Palace of Fine Arts on the district’s western edge is the only remaining structure of that era.

A long-time Mecca for young professionals, the Marina is also a wonderful family neighborhood. The Marina offers a most beautiful setting, all the wonderful amenities of city life, and a multitude of recreational and cultural opportunities. It is one of the City’s most popular and charming neighborhoods.

   San Francisco's Marina District Recreation

The Marina is surrounded by a three beautiful recreation areas: delightful Marina Green, (bordering the Bay along the district’s southern edge), the magnificent Presidio (to the west) and Fort Mason Center (to the east). All offer a offer a wealth of recreational and cultural opportunities.

Beautiful Marina Green, is in many ways the heart of the Marina. Running several blocks along the Bay’s edge, Marina Green is a prime spot for joggers, bicyclists, roller skaters, kite-flyers and other recreational enthusiasts. Or take a leisurely walk and enjoy the breath-taking views along the Golden Gate Promenade, which starts at the west end of Marina Green and continues along the Bay to Fort Point, at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge.

At the Marina’s western edge is the magnificent Presidio, a former military base that is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. With its stunning views, miles of forrest, fascinating historic sites, hiking and bicycling trails, and gorgeous beaches, it offers a wonderful escape from the hectic pace of the City.

   San Francisco's Marina District Culture

Fort Mason Center, is one San Francisco’s primary cultural centers, housing numerous art galleries, museums, theaters and restaurants. It is the home of the Mexican Museum, the experimental Magic Theater and the Young Performers Theater, to name just a few.

   San Francisco's Marina District Shopping

Chestnut Street, in the heart of the Marina, is a delightful shopping district, with a multitude of charming shops and inviting restaurants.

Union Street, with its chic shops, boutiques and restaurants is within easy walking distance.
